Anna Valdez - "Objects of Affection"

Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Objects of Affection, a solo exhibition featuring new works by Bay Area-based artist Anna Valdez. Returning for her third solo presentation with the gallery, Valdez’s maximalist still life paintings offer a glimpse through the artist’s lens into art history and the familiar.

Predominately made during the shelter in place orders reaching across the globe, Valdez examines the domestic space as a source of refuge and identity. The objects within each still life, both living and inanimate, become characters woven throughout the body of work. Vases, shells and plants become familiar, reappearing within different vignettes changing their context and relationship to one another.

Filled with an effortless exuberance, Valdez’s saturated oil on canvas and paper works for Objects of Affection examine our relationship to everyday objects that surround us. Combining the ornamental, nods to craft and references to women in art history, each painting acknowledges Valdez’s work “existing within an artistic lineage” and visually cites her research and fore-bearers. Each object offers autobiographical clues, allowing the viewer glimpses of artifacts and talismans.
