Kim Cogan - "Flashback"
Hashimoto Contemporary SF is pleased to present “Flashback”, a solo exhibition by Kim Cogan. By focusing on the light and forms of the urban environment, Cogan's latest series of paintings explore the iconography of memory.
Steeped in San Francisco's obscure enclaves and outer landscapes, Cogan's subjects transport the viewer to a timeless place at once familiar and incomplete. The paintings document the vanishing architecture of the city's streets, activating recollections of the past akin to discovering a long-lost photograph of a bygone age. Cogan’s work reminds us that even in our race forward, contemporary life is inextricably linked to the understanding of our past.
Cogan’s practice is defined by his acute attention to technique and composition. Utilizing the tactile elements of his medium, the paintings accentuate the depicted subject’s atmosphere, enveloping each scene in an alluring aura. Building up paint in both translucent and opaque layers, Cogan balances a sense of defined depth with loose expressive qualities. The artist adds or subtracts detail to focus the viewer on specific moments within the composition. His aim is not merely to reproduce a literal translation of the scene, rather it is to elicit a response through a complete visual experience.
Please join us for “Flashback”, opening Saturday, October 7 with an evening reception from 6pm - 9pm, where the artist will be in attendance. This exhibition will be on view through Saturday, October 28. For more information, additional images, or exclusive content, please email us at info@hashimotocontemporary.com.
