SAN FRANCISCO - Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Erasing Time, a solo exhibition by San Francisco-based artist Sean Newport. Each work is comprised of hand cut and painted wood shapes that create dimensional tessellations that explore color, form and light. Newport's latest body of work utilizes countless layers of paint on his signature wooden pixels that are meticulously sanded to reveal the layers and time beneath.
Continuing his exploration of chromatic interaction, Newport’s most recent body of work delves into the passage of time and revealing the intensive process behind his work. Many layers of paint are applied to the hand cut forms before stripping them away to reveal the colors beneath. Reminiscent of reptilian scales or heat maps, the rippling hues imbue the sharp edged wooden shapes with an organic, living quality.
The macro and micro worlds within each work invite the viewer in to examine minute details of the individual as well as the undulating patterns across the collective whole. Encouraging play and experimentation, each work can be displayed in any orientation allowing different patterns to surface through the shifting shadows and highlights. Akin to the turning of a clock, each piece keeps its own time or erases it entirely.
An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 3rd from 4 to 7pm, the artist will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on view through July 1st. For more information, additional images, or exclusive content, please email info@hashimotocontemporary.com
