Gabe Langholtz - "Can You Feel When I Vandalize Your Heart?"
SAN FRANCISCO - Hashimoto Contemporary San Francisco is pleased to announce Can You Feel When I Vandalize Your Heart? a new upcoming solo exhibition by Austin-based artist Gabe Langholtz.
In the tradition of folk art, Gabe Langholtz routinely employs the use of mundane cultural objects to establish a contemporary narrative, often drawing on humor, parody, and pastiche as tools for social commentary. Many of his works are still-life paintings with a distinctly American quality. Although Langholtz’s work is primarily representational, it draws inspiration from American color field painting, focusing on color relations, pattern making, form, and linework. Langholtz is also influenced by the works of Mary Fedden, Philip Guston, Agnes Martin, and Gary Bunt. This will be his debut solo exhibition with Hashimoto Contemporary.
Beneath its pulp-novel aura, Can You Feel When I Vandalize Your Heart, is an exploration of desire, addiction, and the psychological effects of familiarity, sprung from the artist’s newfound awareness that nostalgia pulls on our heartstrings unapologetically and with increasing frequency over the course of time. In this collection of work, a series of episodic evocations in paint tantamount to the writings of Charles Bukowski, Langholtz serves up intimate images of objects and incidents as emotional triggers for the dewy-eyed and pandemic weary.
Can You Feel When I Vandalize Your Heart will be on view August 6th - 27th with an opening reception on Saturday, August 6th from 4pm-7pm, no appointment necessary. In order to ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff, please note that proof of full vaccination and masks are required for entry.
